Decision Guide

Should I Get a Home Battery in Scotland?

It depends on your electricity use and tariff — a battery works hardest in homes with solar, higher usage or a time-of-use tariff with a clear gap between cheap and peak rates.

Match your situation to the row that fits. Any saving depends on your own tariff, usage and battery size, so your survey and written quote are where real figures come from.

Solar + low electricity use (under 3,500 kWh)

    Recommended size
    5 kWh
    Main benefit

Worth it? Maybe — modest return

  • Your situation

    Solar + typical 3-bed (3,500–5,000 kWh)

    Recommended size
    9–10 kWh
    Main benefit
    Solar surplus plus cheap-rate top-up

    Worth it? Yes

  • Your situation

    Solar + 4-bed family (5,000+ kWh, EV/heat pump)

    Recommended size

    Worth it? Yes — strong

  • Your situation

NO solar + time-of-use tariff (e.g. Octopus Flux)

    Recommended size
    10–13.5 kWh
    Main benefit
Charges cheap, runs the home at peak

Worth it? Yes if engaged with smart tariffs

  • Your situation

NO solar + standard fixed tariff

    Recommended size
    —
    Main benefit
    Little price gap to use

Worth it? No — not yet

Battery Without Solar

Can I Get a Home Battery Without Solar Panels?

Yes — a standalone battery charges from cheap off-peak grid electricity and discharges at peak rates, so you buy less electricity at the expensive times without any solar panels.

It's increasingly popular for Scottish homes on time-of-use tariffs. Here's how standalone home batteries work and whether they make sense for your property.

Off-peak: battery charges

Cheaper rate

Off-peak hours set by your time-of-use tariff, often overnight

Peak: battery powers your home

Peak rate

The more expensive hours, usually late afternoon and early evening

How does a standalone battery charge?

The battery automatically charges from the grid during the cheaper off-peak hours set by your time-of-use tariff, often overnight. During the more expensive peak hours, usually late afternoon and early evening, it powers your home from stored electricity instead of buying from the grid.

Who suits a battery without solar?

Households that use a lot of electricity in the evening, homes with all-electric heating or an electric car, people comfortable with smart tariffs and apps, and properties not yet ready for solar. The survey sizes the battery to your own usage.

What decides the saving without solar?

The gap between your cheap and peak rates, how much of your evening use the battery covers, and how many days a year it cycles. 0% VAT applies until March 2027. Savings depend on tariff and usage and are not guaranteed, so ask for figures based on your own bills.

Which battery brands work without solar?

Several well-known battery brands work without solar. Our installer partners recommend a model and size based on your property, usage and tariff, and confirm the price in a written quote. Full brand comparison →

Will a battery keep the lights on during a power cut?

True backup power (keeping your home running during a grid outage) requires specific hardware — not all batteries provide this. Tesla Powerwall 3 includes backup capability via its Backup Gateway. Duracell Dura5 offers backup with additional hardware. Pylontech systems typically do not provide outage backup without additional components. Specify your backup needs in your enquiry.
